A volleyball match brawl between teams from two hamlets snowballed into a group clash, killing one person and leaving two others injured, near Sholavaram in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday.

It all began with a ‘friendly’ volleyball match between teams from Panchetti and Neduvarambakkam hamlets. Both sides picked up a quarrel, after which Panchetti’s Parthiban was assaulted.

Later, Parthiban and his friend, also a resident of Panchetti, went to a fast-food joint at Andarkottaram around 7.30 pm. There they got into an argument with some youth from Neduvarambakkam and got beaten up.

After Parthiban and his friend returned to their village, Panchetti youth got worked up and decided to retaliate. They went in a group to Neduvarambakkam but were outnumbered and beaten up. In the process, Panchetti youth Ramu died on the spot and two others were injured.

After the Sholavaram Police were informed, they reached the spot and shifted the body to Ponneri Government Hospital. The injured too were treated at that hospital.

Security has been stepped up in both the hamlets. “We have registered a case and picked up a few persons involved in the clashes. We have not arrested anyone so far,” a senior police officer said.

“We are awaiting the post-mortem report to find out the caused of death,” he added.
