A vehicle in which a team of policemen in plainclothes was escorting three ganja peddlers was stoned by a few locals, said to be accomplices of the accused, near Basin Bridge on Wednesday night.

According to sources, the team arrested the trio - Kumar, Ganesh and Chinnaponu -  at their houses near Kesava Pillai Park area and was taking them inside the car, when a group of locals close to the accused allegedly tried to stop them. The locals, whom police say are mostly accomplice of the peddlers, started behaving violently in an attempt to relieve the peddlers. “They are all associates of a criminal Vellazagi. We also seized nearly a kg of ganja from them,” said a senior police official. Sources said that the police team had a tough time in putting up with the angry mob. More police personnel were sent to control the situation after which the team escorted the accused out of the locality.
