On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, the Tamil Institute of Education Research and Advancement (TIERA) awarded several teachers for their exceptional service, at the residence of the country’s first vice-president Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, here on Thursday.
TIERA felicitated nearly 70 teachers from all over Tamil Nadu with the Aasiriyar Chemmal Virudhu, based on their long experience and achievements in the field of teaching.
TIERA has been instrumental in awarding teachers for more than six years and it continues to identify teachers from various fields in school and colleges.
“Our main aim is to recognise all teachers who have contributed largely in their fields. This time, we mainly focused on teachers from arts and sciences, yoga, NSS, etc,” said Uma Maheswari, patron at TIERA.
Chairman and managing director at Ennore Port Ltd., M A Bhaskar Achar, presented the awards, while Justice P Jothimani presided over the event.
In his speech, Justice Jothimani urged teachers and students to follow the path of Radhakrishnan and regretted that youngsters these days were moving away from traditional values.
“We should realise what the IT corridor has done to the younger generation. It is an irony that when Westerners are moving towards yoga and meditation, we Indians have forgotten our nativity and are moving towards their unsuccessful way of living. It is the duty of every teacher to bring the youngsters back on track by providing good knowledge to students at the every stage,” he said.
Further, he also stressed on the importance of inculcating reading habit in students, which, according to him, is lacking these days. He concluded by saying that it is the teachers who can mould youngsters into responsible citizens by imparting good knowledge.
During the event, TIERA also officially launched a quarterly journal entitled Karka Karpikka.
IIT professor Vasantha Kandaswamy received the copy of the journal from R Rajmohan of the National Shipping Board.
