No let up as rain soaks city; Man dies at Pallavaram

While Chennaiites had a glimpse of sunshine on Thursday, the city received heavy showers after dusk, again throwing traffic out of gear in many areas.

Heavy rains, accompanied by lightning, lashed Ambattur, Anna Nagar and other western areas besides Nungambakkam and Choolaimedu, as well as the suburbs. Some parts of the city and the suburbs received rainfall till noon since Wednesday night.

According to the Meteorological Department, Chennai Airport and Tambaram received 3 cm rainfall. Chembarambakkam, Poonamallee, Poondi, Pallipattu, Ramakrishnarajupet, Red Hills, Thamaraipakkam, Tiruttani and Cholavaram in neighbouring Tiruvallur district and Sriperumpudur and Kancheepuram recorded 1 cm. The Regional Meteorological Centre forecast that it would be cloudy and rain or thundershowers would occur in some areas.

Meanwhile, a man was washed away in floods in the Adyar river, while he was making his way across a causeway at Gowl Bazaar near Pallavaram, which was inundated due to heavy rains on Wednesday.

The victim, Muthu (26), a truck driver, used the causeway to reach Gerugambakkam on the other side when he slipped and fell into the river, according to the police. A police officer said that due to strong currents, the body could have been washed away several kilometres.
