A 24-year-old man died after he set himself on fire in front of his lover’s house near Kundrathur on Tuesday. The youth was allegedly depressed over the girl’s refusal to marry him.
Police said Ilayaraja, of Perambalur who worked at a petrol bunk in Alwarthirunagar, picked up an argument with the girl in front of her house at Malayambakkam village before setting himself on fire on Tuesday evening.
He was rushed to a hospital and later referred to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he died within a few hours.
“Ilayaraja and the girl were in love with each other for several years. But the girl’s family opposed the relationship and got her married to another person. However, after the girl’s husband died in a road accident about six months ago, the two started courting each other again. This time the girl’s family had agreed to their marriage. However, it appears that Ilayaraja took the decision over a petty quarrel he had with the girl,” said a police officer.
Police said the girl stopped talking to Ilayaraja in recent days after a quarrel they had. She had also told him that she would not marry him.
“He was threatening suicide if the girl does not speak to him. He had come prepared with a can of petrol, which he had taken from the bunk where he worked. After the girl snubbed him and went into her house, he doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire,” police said.
The neighbours rescued him and took him to a nearby hospital. However, as he suffered over 60 per cent burns, there was little chance for his survival.
Kundrathur police registered a case.
