Over  1,080 grams of gold ornaments, many of which were studded with diamonds, were stolen from a house in Kanche- epuram on Monday.

A Jayakumar, running a finance company and a restaurant, and his family had left the house at MM Avenue locked and left for Chennai for shopping at around 5 pm. When they returned  by 11 pm, they were shocked to find  the doors open and a locker containing the valuables missing.

On Saturday, Jayakumar had taken the jewels from a bank locker as a wedding of a close relative was scheduled on Tuesday. “We suspect the role of insiders or persons well acquainted with the family in the crime. The burglars seemed to have had knowledge about the jewels taken to the house and were also able to open the doors using duplicate keys,” said a police officer.

While two doors of the house were opened by the burglars using duplicate keys, they have drilled a bedroom door and broke it open. “The locker containing the jewels was kept in a cupboard and the burglars have taken away the locker,” said a police officer.

Suicide Over Usury

A 39-year-old man committed suicide on Sunday after allegedly being pressured by a gang to repay the debt he had. Gopi, working as a van driver and residing at Perungudi, hanged himself in his house on Sunday leaving a note blaming the gang for his extreme step, as it had threatened him to repay `5 lakh he had borrowed.

But the police had another version. “He (Gopi) had borrowed the amount and was struggling to repay. He was asked to repay it soon. But there are also disputes within his family which we suspect could be the reason for the suicide,” said Thuraipakkam inspector C Mahesh Kumar.
