Noted Carnatic vocalist M Balamuralikrishna has been conferred the Thyagabrahma Nadha Vibushan title by Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha.

Honouring the musician with the award, R Seshasayee, executive vice-chairman of the Hinduja Group, said that the title was appropriate for him as it had nadha, a primordial part of music, in it. “It has become a habit for me to listen to Beethoven’s Symphony and Balamuralikrishna’s songs,” he said.

In his felicitation speech, vocalist Cleveland V V Sundaram pointed out that Balamuralikrishna had about 400 compositions, including varnams and kritis, to his credit. “Forty years ago, after he sang a song in Madhava Manohari raga, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, who listened to it, said only Balamuralikrishna sang the raga without slipping into Sri Ranjani,” he recalled.

The programme was followed by a concert by Balamuralikrishna, who was accompanied by M A Sundareswaran on the violin, Guruvayur Sri Durai on the mridangam and Tiruchy K Murali on the ghatam. The seven-day Thyagaraja Aradhana 2014 will culminate with a Harikatha performance by U Ve Kalyanapuram Aravamudhachariar Swamy on Thyagaraja Ramayanam from February 18-20.
