The Citizen Consumer Club of D G Vaishnav College has bagged the best consumer club award for the third consecutive time this year. Presenting the award to the club during a commemorative programme for World Consumer Rights Day at the college campus, M Vijayakumar, Secretary of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and the chief guest of the event, expressed that in a democracy, real power rested with the people.
During his address, Vijayakumar said, “being an IAS officer or even the post of the Prime Minister is not real power. Real power rests in knowledge and information. And the right time to learn it is during one’s formative years in college.”
Vijayakumar also stressed on the need for awareness on consumer rights. “In order to demand the right, you should know about it and understand it thoroughly,” he said.
The Club, which conducted the event in association with the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, was presented with the award by Vijayakumar.
J Vijayathilagam, Club coordinator, said, “Our symbol has three eyes, symbolising the need to see clearly, be aware and be alert,” said Vijayathilagam. The consumer clubs from GSS Jain College and Hindu College were presented the second and third best club awards.
The club also released a journal titled Illumination 2014 during the event.
