Despite Compulsory Helmet Rule, Two Motorcyclists Die in Chennai

CHENNAI: Two motorcyclists despite wearing mandatory helmets were killed in separate accidents involving lorries.

Selvaraj (20), of Kannagi Nagar, Thuraipakkam who worked as a cab driver, was fatally knocked down from his two-wheeler around 9-45 am by an oil tanker near the aquatic complex on Velachery Main Road. Selvaraj came under the tanker's left rear wheels.

Despite wearing a helmet, he died on the spot. Guindy traffic police moved the body to Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.

Elsewhere Ramanathan (27), of Pallipattu, Villupuram, was run over by a lorry in Sholinganallur on Wednesday evening, According to police, Ramanathan was riding a two-wheeler on Rajiv Gandhi Salai around 6 pm when it skidded and went under the wheels of a lorry behind him.

He too died on the spot, despite wearing a helmet. Cases were registered and the lorry drivers arrested.
