Man Flung Off Flyover After Mishap, Dies

CHENNAI: In a bizarre accident, a 48-year-old former Municipal Council member and DMK functionary was thrown off on the barren area of Porur lake from a height of 30 feet from the Maduravoyal bypass flyover after the two-wheeler he was travelling was rammed by a car, on Monday. Police are on the look out for a dental surgeon who had caused the accident.

Police said the wife of the deceased, though traumatized, survived with minor injuries, and stayed on the bridge after the mishap.

The deceased, identified as Kothandapani, a former civic body member of Porur, was proceeding to Tambaram, along with his wife, Bhanumathi, to a relative’s place.

A Maruti Alto car, also heading to Tambaram, hit the Scooty Pep of Kothandapani.

The incident took place when the couple were half-way through the flyover and under the impact of the collision, Kothandapani was flung off from the vehicle. He sustained grievous injuries as he landed on the barren land of the lake.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the car belonged to a woman dentist, who was on the wheels when the mishap occurred. “We have traced the identity of the woman doctor. We will bring her into custody. We have already registered a case on charges of causing death due to negligence on the dentist”, said a police official attached to the Poonamallee traffic investigation wing.

The deceased was running a printing press in Porur and was elected to municipality council in 2006.
