Southern Railway to install 300 PoS machines for reservation

At present, in most reservation centres, there is only one counter which accepts card payments, that too credit cards alone.

CHENNAI: Soon you can book your tickets at railway reservation counters by swiping debit/credit cards. Southern Railway has ordered 300 Point of Sales (PoS) machines, which will eventually be increased up to 1000 depending on public reception. They will be installed at passenger reservation counters across Tamil Nadu, Puduchery and Kerala.

This is in tune with the central government’s push towards less-cash, more-digital transactions.
At present, in most reservation centres, there is only one counter which accepts card payments, that too credit cards alone. But that is set to change imminently.

“We are gearing up to encourage digital payments. Already, over 58 per cent of passenger tickets are booked online. That is bound to go up further,” a senior railway official told Express.

The Central government on Thursday, announced a series of incentives to popularise digital payments including in the railway sector.

Monthly and seasonal suburban railway tickets purchased through digital mode would get 0.5 per cent discount. But the significant enticement is the free accident insurance cover, worth Rs 10 lakh, for those booking  tickets online.

Ajit Saxena, Chief Commercial Manager said, they  already had fruitful discussions with State Bank of India besides IDBI Bank for securing these these machines.
