CHENNAI: Work on the long-pending Maduravoyal-Chennai Port elevated corridor is expected to resume soon. Its length may go up by 300 metres with a possible change in  alignment.

The Rs 1,800 crore project has been stalled for over six years.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, who played a key role in reviving the project after holding several rounds of discussion with State government officials, said there could be a change in the alignment taking into account the State government’s suggestions.

“We have agreed to change the alignment along the Cooum river. It was earlier on the north side of Cooum near the mouth of Cooum. Now it will be on the southern side near the (Madras) University,” he said. He also said instead of two pillars along the Cooum, it  will be single pillar for the elevated corridor. The minister also said there is likely to be a cost overrun for the project and a fresh detailed project report would be prepared.
