Insertion of additional sheets in ration cards from Jan 2

CHENNAI: With the validity of the existing ration cards extended by an year, authorities of Civil Supplies department have swung into action to complete insertion of additional sheets in the cards within a short period so that consumers can be sparred of difficulties.

"Insertion of additional sheets in the ration cards will begin from January 2. The card holders can visit the shops and get the sheets inserted," a senior official of the Civil Supplies department told Express.
The total number of ration cards in existence in the state is 97,18, 724 with a beneficiary strength of 3, 64, 33,147. The state has 34,732 public distribution system (PDS) shops.

The official informed that required number of additional leaflets have already been handed to the District Supply Officers (DSOs) who would subsequently dispatch them to the ration shops.

The State government recently issued an order to extend the validity of the existing ration cards by a year.
It may be noted that the old ration cards are in use for about ten years now. No new cards were printed to replace them so far. Only additional sheets were inserted all these years.
