DMDK MLAs Boycott Rest of Assembly Session

As the Speaker did not yield to the demand, Chandirakumar led his colleagues to walk out and later announced that the DMDK members would boycott the rest of the session.

CHENNAI: The main opposition party in the State Assembly, DMDK, on Thursday announced that its members would boycott the rest of the ongoing Assembly session.

Talking to media, the party Whip in the Assembly, VC Chandirakumar said the Ministers had been levelling false charges against DMDK MLAs and that they were not allowed to defend themselves in the House. On February 17, the DMK president M Karunanidhi announced that DMK members would not attend the House hereafter.

On Thursday, the Environment Minister ND Venkatachalam interrupted the speech of Chandirakumar and said the DMDK MLAs were elected to the House only because of the AIADMK. Challenging that Chandirakumar said the Ministers won their seats because of DMDK support.

This sparked heated exchanges and a remark made by Chandirakumar was expunged by the Speaker. Chandirakumar demanded that either the remarks made by him and the Ministers should remain or the records or both expunged.

As the Speaker did not yield to the demand, Chandirakumar led his colleagues to walk out and later announced that the DMDK members would boycott the rest of the session.
