Trio's Monsoon Parody of Carol Goes Viral

CHENNAI: Christmas may be long gone, but a Chennai-inspired parody of a popular carol has been doing the rounds on social media lately.

Titled 12 Days of Monsoon Christmas, the song is a fun take on what the city’s residents had to put up with as a result of the heavy monsoon this year. With lines like ‘a Partridge in a pear tree’ replaced with ‘no phones, no electricity’ — part time lyricist and full-time dentist Yohan Chacko says the song took about an hour to write.

And although it was uploaded by members of the group, who call themselves the ‘Beef Sappad Trio’, on YouTube only on January 3 (a tad late to make the season) — the response has been more than positive, with many glad for a ‘light’ start to the New Year after a rather heavy-hearted December.

Sandeep John, also in the group and whose name one may recognise as the prime time jock of a popular English radio station admits, “At first, we were concerned if a parody song on the monsoon would be appropriate at this time.” However, with a little encouragement from friends and the general mantra that moving forward is the focus, the trio decided to go ahead and do it in anyway.

Covering everything from rescue missions to fake predictions and even the over-the-top crocodile scare, the parody is an ROFL ride through and through. Incidentally, the whole video was shot in Yohan’s dental clinic in Choolaimedu, with X-ray viewers doubling up as camera lights and what not!

To top it off, the only female member of the Beef Sappad trio, Shilpa Natarajan sports a grey wig much like the character of Storm (who has the power to control the weather) from the X-Men series. Talk about crazy, huh?

Meanwhile, some groups sharing this online have tagged the song ‘Chennai’s Official Christmas Carol for 2015’.
