CCTV Captures Suspected Killer of Businessman

CHENNAI: A day after a 50-year-old businessman Babu Singh was shot dead at close range by an unidentified man in a busy street at Sowcarpet, police have got a clear picture of the suspect taken from the CCTV footage, who was clad in blue jeans and dark shirt, running away from the scene of crime on Tuesday evening. 

According to a source, the suspect is to have come in an autorickshaw, got down near a small shop at the end of the road and walked into Erulappan Street, where Babu had just then parked his bike and was above to open the shop. The man fired thrice, but only one bullet is suspected to hit Babu’s head from behind.

“The man after the incident managed to walk into the street to escape. Meanwhile, the autorickhaw parked at the end of the road also moved away,” said the source.

The registration number of the autorickshaw was not clear in the CCTV footage, police claim.

With elections round the corner, the police teams are deployed everywhere in the city. But the accused escaped from them, shot the businessman during rush hour in a busy street and fled the scene. However, police said, a special team has been formed to nab the suspect and a sniffer dog pressed into service on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, the incident has created a shock among the residents. They all refer to Babu as friendly person. “His son used to visit the shop sometimes to help his dad who worked alone,” said a local.
