CHENNAI:  In the first such incident ever since the Chennai Metro Rail became operational 11 months ago, a UK returnee from the city jumped in front of an oncoming Metro train at Vadapalani station on Wednesday.

The alert driver saw it almost on time and applied emergency breaks, but the youth lost one of his legs. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, sources said.

The youth was identified as Sudaman Parthasarathy, a 26-year-old from Porur who had returned from UK and is presently unemployed.

Sources said Parthasarathy was standing on the opposite side when the train from Alandur to Koyambedu arrived at Vadapalani station around 7.45 pm.

The incident affected the schedule of trains, the Metro Rail sources said.

They refused to provide any further information.
