When the wheel of fortune comes your way

CHENNAI: You may not be able to comprehend it right away but once you go back and think about it again, it will start making sense,” said the 19-year-old tarot card reader, Shreya Gupta. You read it right — 19. I was quite wary about her skills and ability, but now that the readings have started to make sense, not anymore. Age is just a number.

Let me take you back to the reading session. I entered her room, a typical room of a college going student who loves to pin photographs of her loved ones on the walls. But by the corner of her room sat a couple of tarot card boxes, a number of different crystals and a Tibetan sound bowl. This was her happy place. “When I’m with my cards, I don’t feel or think about anything else,” she smiles.

She placed a red cloth over the table, beckoned me to sit down and uttered a small prayer while touching the pack. The cards were then spread and my life was being discussed. She began by picking out cards that could tell her who I was, make her understand me and all the while, my suspicion for her skills dominated my mind.

I tried to read her but she was as calm as anyone could be with no sense of consciousness or fear that what if she read it wrong? She had complete faith in herself. Talking about my career, I asked her if I could achieve my childhood dream, my one purpose in life. She picked and laid out five cards and said, “When you start to pursue it, you will feel like this is not what you want but you will not back out. You will achieve your dream,” she pointing to the last card — the wheel of fortune. “This card rarely makes a show but when it does, it most certainly means yes. I beamed, but still suspicious.

We moved on to a few spells (as she called it) which are basically a few card formations which talk about a defined set of issues. We did two spells, The Projection and The Gypsy. While the projection was more laid out like a pyramid, the latter was a box of three rows. The projection showed us how I see myself right now, What I can’t see about myself, my tests and boundaries, people and relationships, goals and ideals, desires and dreams, what is to come and what is to go and finally, the outcome.

“You are stressed out about a lot of things and you are trying to work on them. There are a few tests that you have to give in life. Relationships are not an idea right now. Try setting more goals. You are looking at a limited space when you can actually achieve more than that.” This part of the session made sense.

The Gypsy showed us my past, present and future in my work, home, luck, friends, love, plans and personal quest. Again, there were some that did not sound familiar to me and there were some readings that scared me. Not only because it was dark but I realised it was true.

Talking about the dark stuff, Shreya says “I don’t do that. People do come to me and ask about their death but that’s not what I do. I guide people through my cards, to help them take better decisions in life.”

After the reading session was done, I got back to my hostel. Certain things happened that tallied with the things she said. It couldn’t be a coincidence because deep down I knew it was true too.  She showed me a part of myself that I had hidden within me and now it’s out and I can work on that. Age is just a number.

“Once you attain trust and faith in yourself, you will understand the cards. It depends on your passion and maturity. Its been two years now and I have complete trust in myself and I can help people,” she smiles.
