CHENNAI: Colouring books for adults is quite popular everywhere in the world these days - credits to work pressure and the determination to make money and achieve goals. But stress can also kill your dreams. Experiencing the same thoughts, Deepika Mahalakshmi recently published Varnikaa, a Madhubani-themed colouring book for adults.

Three elements that stand out in her book are the theme, the space given to write your thoughts and the tear-out pages. She took us through each of these while we looked through the drawings of the intricate patterns of flowers, suns and Egyptian gods too.

“Madhubani art has not been spoken of much in earlier times. Only now its turned into a fad. I have been into Madhubani for the last three years.  The art form is all about bright colours and happiness. The peacocks, flowers, fishes, dancing, everything with happy colours. My art firm is called Varnikaa which means colours,” she smiles. Though Deepika is an IT professional for the past six years, she is also a self-taught artist and does commissioned art work.

A few months back, she came across a few Facebook pages on Adult Colouring book. Inspired almost immediately, Deepika made up her mind to publish a book. She pulled out her sketchbook that has always been her relaxation companion. She explored her mind for new designs. This brings us to the second interesting part.

Deepika tried and tested all the 20 patterns and while colouring one, she would pen down the thoughts running in her head. “It’s a therapy. Thoughts that cross one’s mind while colouring a small metal can be something surprising. Pen it down and you’ll feel good. You can also pen down how you feel after an hour of colouring. It will help you process your stress levels.” Finally, the tear-outs. It is a good idea since everyone has their own comfort levels. One may want to sprawl across the floor and colour or maybe stick it on the wall and paint.

Deepika plans to bring out a series of three Madhubani-based books and indulge in other formstoo. The book costs `499 and is available at notionpress.com
