Toddler dies after mother throws her into a well in Chennai

Manimangalam police booked a 30-year-old mother for allegedly throwing her one-and-a-half-year-old baby girl to her death into a well in the same locality on Sunday afternoon.

CHENNAI: Manimangalam police booked a 30-year-old mother for allegedly throwing her one-and-a-half-year-old baby girl to her death into a well in the same locality on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, Nirmala (30) and her  husband Karthikeyan (35), were residents of Ambattur in Chennai. The couple had a baby girl, Bhuvaneshwari.Karthikeyan works as a painter and his wife was a homemaker.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple used to quarrel frequently. On Sunday, when the couple had a fight, Nirmala, in a bout of anger, decided to go to her mother’s house in Keelpadapai in Kancheepuram district.

Around the afternoon, Nirmala had allegedly decided to end her life by jumping into an open well near her house. She decided to take her daughter along.

When her parents were asleep at home, she took her daughter and threw her into the well first. However, she did not jump in. Within minutes the child died,” police said.

The neighbours informed the police, who rushed to the spot and fished out the body of the girl and sent it to the government hospital for autopsy.

A case has been registered with the Manimangalam police, following which Nirmala was booked on charges of murder.
