Coaching terminal at Tambaram to be further delayed

CHENNAI : The commissioning of the coaching terminal at Tambaram, which would serve as a maintenance depot for train coaches, is likely to be delayed further. The coaching terminal is a crucial addition to the railway infrastructure in Tambaram, a station long mooted as the third major passenger hub of Chennai.

Though officials say civil work on the terminal is almost complete, important works such as electrification and signalling are pending and require more time.

Presently, there are two coaching terminals in the city - at Basin Bridge for trains operated from Central, and at Gopalsamy Nagar (Egmore). Officials say there is no additional land available for expansion at both these places. In this backdrop, work on Tambaram coaching terminal was taken up.

Under phase 1 of the project, work on two-pit lines of full length, two stabling lines and four sick lines have been completed. With adequate space available, officials say two pit lines and four stabling lines could be added further if necessary.

The deadline was revised repeatedly - September was the latest deadline.
