Gang assaults lorry driver near Chennai

A lorry driver was injured when a gang of knife-wielding youth allegedly tried to steal his mobile phone at Madurantakam on Saturday.

CHENNAI: A lorry driver was injured when a gang of knife-wielding youth allegedly tried to steal his mobile phone at Madurantakam on Saturday.

Police said the driver, E Satiamurthi (22), was sleeping in his lorry when the gang tried to steal his phone at 3 am. Though he was injured when they attacked him with a knife, he is now out of danger.

“When he woke up with a start, they panicked and tried to snatch the phone,” the investigating official said. “In the commotion that followed, people nearby heard the driver and caught the four persons.”

Of the four, one is a juvenile. The others are Pradeep (23), Surya (22) and Ram (19).

In a similar case, police said that a man was robbed while on his way back home on Friday night.

The victim G Muralikumar (21) lodged a complaint with the Kasimedu police station.

Muralikumar is a painter of Tondiarpet. “He was walking home when two men on a bike hit him and robbed him of Rs 3000 and his mobile phone. While we were on night rounds,  we managed to catch one of the accused while the other ran away,” the investigating official said. Vignesh alias Vicky (20) was caught by police, while Fasil escaped.
