Minimally invasive, scarless heart surgery at Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital

CHENNAI: A beating heart cardiac bypass surgery was performed without slitting open the chest in the centre by Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. This is the first time that such an operation is being performed in a government hospital in Tamil Nadu.

The minimally invasive “scarless” surgery was performed a week ago, at the hospital, with the patient recovering fast. A Muniyandi (65), was admitted into RGGGH with recurrent chest pain, restlessness, fatigue and palpitation.

Cardiac bypass surgery is usually performed by slitting the chest up to 8 inches in the centre and cracking the rib cage. The bones are then tied back and the opening is sutured leaving a large scar behind. However, the team of expert doctors, lead by Mariappan, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, performed the surgery by making a small incision near the left chest.

“Performing a minimally invasive surgery not only has cosmetic benefits. The patient heals much faster compared to one who’s undergone open chest surgery,” said Narayana Babu, Dean of RGGGH.
