CHENNAI: Abandoned just a few hours after birth, a newborn baby was mauled to death by stray dogs near Nanganallur on Saturday.
The incident created panic when residents spotted stray dogs feeding on the baby. According to sources, a conservancy worker attached to the Greater Chennai Corporation spotted stray dogs feeding on something wrapped in a cloth placed very close to the garbage lying on the roadside and chased the dogs and found it to be a baby.
The police who rushed to the spot found the baby’s mutilated body. It was immediately sent to Chromepet Government Hospital.
Initial probe revealed that the baby might have been born out of an illicit affair. “It might have been born elsewhere, but dumped here. However, we are collecting records from nearby hospitals on deliveries. The area does not have CCTV coverage,” said a senior police officer. A case has been registered.
