CHENNAI:For their diamond jubilee year, the Madras ENT Research Foundation combined a skull-base workshop along with microsurgical techniques of ear surgery. Both neurosurgeons and ENT surgeons work together to handle skull-base cases that’s often done in the case of tumours, absence of the inner ear where they perform auditory brainstem implantation or in the case of trauma, said Dr RS Anand Kumar, academic director of the Madras ENT Research Foundation.

“Some of our most experienced faculty will demonstrate and guide post graduates and junior ENT surgeons during the hands-on workshop,” he added. The workshop addresses aspects of temporal bone surgery from basic otology to lateral skull base surgery.
While the hands-on workshop for students was held on Friday, it will continue during the weekend. “Surgeons will perform procedures at the hospital, and participants can watch it on streamed videos at Hotel Crowne Plaza for which around 400 people have registered,” explains Anand Kumar.
Dr Pratibha George, an otology fellow said, “The training helps us know what to look for, avoid complications, learn new techniques and improve our own.” The participants demonstrated around five procedures on Friday. Two international surgeons are in Chennai for the workshop.
