CHENNAI: Independent music scene in Chennai has been increasing rapidly. More people are investing in bands and their music. Adithya Gopi, the bassist of Synergy-The Band, chats with us ahead of their performance at Saarang.

Formed in 2014, there have been changes in the line-up and the name of the band itself. “The band was formed by our drummer, Moison Pragash, with few other guys. It was then called E-Minor,” he says. The band has won some national level competitions after which they decided to change the name into Synergy-The band.

“All of us have different taste and together we decided that the band should play experimental songs, that is a mix of various genres. Hence the name fits the kind of music we play,” he adds. Even through line-up changes, the band was still strong. The current line-up consists of — Roshan Sebastian and Sai Vignesh as vocalists, Sebastian Sathish on the keyboard, Raghul S as the percussionist and Aasim Ahmed as the guitarist. They have been performing during weekends across the city, garnering a small fan base.

Talking about their musical influences, Adithya says, “Each of us have different idols and influences. As a band we aspire to mix all these genres and create something magical.” In August 2016, the band received attention when their cover of Maya Nadhiyile from Kabali (2016) registered more than 37,000 views. The cover video is said to have shared by renowned artistes like Napier Naveen and
Hariharan.

Synergy-The Band had done a mash-up of Un Kadhal Irundhal Podhum and Ek Main Hoon Aur Ek Tu, and finished the composition of their first original Mazhai last month. “We had composed the song especially for Tarang. It was an awesome feeling when we got selected for the finals.” The band is one of the finalists for the light music band competition, Tarang, held at IIT Madras cultural festival Saarang. “We are going to be performing songs like Om Shivoham and Har Har Mahadev in our routine, which will be around 30 minutes. IITians can expect some real groovy performance from us and we are ready to give a fight to other bands.”
