CHENNAI: Sterling silver, studded stones and classic lines…Baroque is all this and so much more. Meet Delhi-based jewellery designer, Bhavini Marwah, the woman behind the brand, who is all about creating timeless pieces for all occasions. She was recently in the city for BigFeed Boulevard, Chennai’s first ever Midnight Market.

“My mother is a jeweller and she has been into gold, polki, wedding trousseau and diamonds for the last 30 years, so I always grew up watching this,” she smiles.

Having done her under-graduation in business management from London, she came back to the country and did a course in gemology from GDPI, followed by a design course from Jhandelwala. This was followed by a tryst at GIA London, where she became a certified gemologist. Interestingly, today she has a degree that allows her to certify diamonds!

Though she was helping her mum in the business, Bhavini wished to move out of this and create a line of her own that would cater to the needs of the youngsters. “The older generations would look at jewellery as an investment piece. People our age want to travel, explore and do more with that money,” she opines.

So this is where Baroque comes in — a cost effective, handcrafted option made in silver. The brand works with 92.7 and 98.5 silver, and all her pieces are authenticated for purity. The young designer also specialises in customisation. It is no secret that the jewellery world is buzzing with designers and competition. “Being cost effective has been a huge challenge for me,” she opines, as she talks about competition in contemporary jewellery. “To break through that and bring my brand out, and make the buck to keep it going has been a challenge,” she elaborates.

This begs the question: what is her design aesthetic? “I ask if I’d want to wear something like this. Making a statement is all about being bold but keeping it classy,” she smiles. Her work is heavily inspired by the western culture with Indian ethnicity infused in between.

Her can clearly stand the test of time, and we ask her about her opinion on trends. “They’re not all that important. It’s classy to be comfortable! So my kind of jewellery is classic and statement makers, not based on trends,” she avers.

So who is a Baroque girl? “My products are for women who have got their heads on their shoulder. For people who want to travel, live their life and be stress-free but those who want to stand out and make a statement,” she opines. Bhavini exhibits her stuff across India and Dubai. With a website underway, 2017 has big plans for her!
