Sankalp starts a therapy centre for special children

CHENNAI: According to the World Health Organisation, the first few years after birth are a very crucial period. The brain matures. It has a significant impact on the physical, social, behavioural and cognitive well being, with far-reaching consequences throughout a person’s life.

In recognition of the need to enhance a child’s development process, Sankalp, a city-based special school catering to children with learning disability, dyslexia and autism, has launched, Akaarah, an early intervention and speech therapy centre for toddlers (1.6 - 3 years) and pre-schoolers (3-6 years).

Lakshmi Krishna Kumar, director, Sankalp, said, “Early intervention programmes for vulnerable infants and toddlers can reduce incidences of future problems. In fact, positive early experiences will lead to the child succeeding in school, workplace and beyond.”

Significantly, it is during the early years that a child picks up language skills and starts to comprehend and respond to conversations.

Based on the experience of Sankalp, which caters to more than 200 children with special needs, Lalitha said children in recent times face language processing problem. “Today, more than academic proficiency, it is communication and comprehension that is important,” she said.

Stating that the speech therapy centre is a step to address that problem, she added, “Parents often delay the process of seeking early intervention for their children. They should ideally seek assistance of professionals when the child turns two or even earlier.”

As per the module designed by Sankalp, there will be a comprehensive and continual evaluation of a child when they are enrolled. The evaluation will be sensitive and specific to every child’s personal background, rather than subscribing to a standard approach.

Individualised treatment plans based on multi-disciplinary approach have been identified, with the involvement of speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, special educators, neurologist, pediatrician and physiotherapist. Parents will also be supported in meeting their responsibilities to nurture their children’s development.
