CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday chaired the State Cabinet meeting at the Secretariat.

Sources said the Cabinet discussed a new Tenancy Act which is more relevant to present times. This Act would  replace the TN Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960 and its amendment in 1973.

Besides, the Cabinet also discussed general law and order situation and issues relating to relocation of TASMAC shops.

For the past few months, there have been numerous agitations across the State where large number of women took part, protesting the relocation of TASMAC shops closer to residential areas and schools. The opposition parties have been raising this issue many times during the ongoing budget session.

Already, the State government had closed 1,000 TASMAC shops to fulfill the electoral promise of the ruling party that it would implement prohibition in a phased manner.
