Cop nabs phone snatchers after 1.5-km chase

CHENNAI: A traffic constable ran behind two mobile phone snatchers for nearly 1.5 kms at Anna Nagar on Saturday evening and nabbed them.
The police constable T Boodhichandar was patrolling on Second Avenue around 8.30 pm when R Raja, 35, a private bus driver, alerted him that two youth on a moped snatched his smartphone and fled. The incident occurred on the Sixth Main Road.

“Since, the boys were on a two-wheeler, they could ride easily through narrow streets, hence I decided not to take the patrol vehicle. However, when the duo realised they were being chased, they panicked and lost control of the vehicle and fell down, when I nabbed them,” Boodhichandar told Express. But Boodhichandar had to run for nearly 1.5 kilometres before he could nab the two.
The constable handed over the two robbers, who were later found to be juveniles, to Thirumangalam police.

A senior police officer said, one of the juveniles, a 17-year-old already was caught in a chain snatching case at Puzhal two months ago. He was released from Chengalpattu observation home recently on  conditional bail.
Meanwhile, when he was on bail, he roped in his 17-year-old friend to snatch mobile phones for pocket money.
Both were earlier studying in Plus Two in a government school.

Praises pour in
After learning about the incident, senior police officers complimen-ted and presented a memento to Boodhich-andar. Both accused were juveniles and were  earlier studying in Plus Two Class in a government school
