Amid an increasing number of style blogs, fashion lines and new trends on runways, it might feel like you’re drowning in a sea of style possibilities. This isn’t always very helpful, though. We might die of an overdose if we see another flannel short tucked into a high waist skirt, paired with stilettos and a statement necklace. So where do you go to if you’re looking for inspiration to get out of your sweatpants and slip into a well put-together ensemble? Television, naturally! Our columnist SAUMYA CHAWLA tells you more...

Sex and The City

How Carrie could afford her wardrobe by being a weekly columnist is beyond us, and honestly at this point, we don’t really care either. But what we love is that inter-weave of unexpected pieces — like a graphic tee and a balloon skirt. Love all colours and tutus! If you're a party girl at heart, channel your inner Samantha Jones with sexy, skin-baring pieces, chunky jewellery and a bit of side boob! Keep it classy like Charlotte with traditional silhouettes that lean toward the feminine side. Get a bow, dainty pumps and a cashmere sweater! Are you a working woman through and through? Hello, Miranda. Stick to a colour scheme from head-to-toe with statement jewellery and bags.

Gossip Girl

The show that made headbands acceptable for women over the age of five bought us two distinct fashion camps — Serena Van Der Woodsen with her body-hugging, slightly bohemian and very leggy ensembles; and Blair Waldorf with her prep chic looks. Blair thinks plaids, chic gray flannel, tweeds and rich jewel tones. If you want to wear lots of coats and jackets like Serena does, the cut is everything. If you take away anything from this article — let it be the importance of a local tailor. Pays off hugely in the long run, and makes your entire outfit look like a million bucks!

Mad Men

You’re only a late night re-run away from reliving the uncanny highlights of the 60s glory days: think double strands of pearls, giant furs, well-fitted pantsuits and kitten heels. So retro! Think full circle dresses, pencil dresses, twin sets, cigarette pants and colourful tights. Special shoutout to Peggy’s Pillbox Hats, especially in Season 7 when she wore a crocheted version of it. How very 70s of her!

Friends

Monica in mom jeans. Phoebe in fuzzy coats. While Rachel Green might have the most ‘Pinterested’ hair on the internet, we are still stuck on her overalls. The most amazing part about this show is that they made style accessible. Unlike SATC, where layering meant a Gucci coat under a YSL slip, this just meant a white shirt over a cardigan. For someone in the fashion industry, Rachel spent a lot of time in tartan pyjamas and still looked put together. Could you BE anymore fashion forward?

Desperate Housewives

Am I the only one who often gets the feeling that they put way more thought into the costumes than they did on the plotlines? Gaby Solis’ cleavage was practically a supporting cast member and she had her look down to an art, with skin tight dresses and sky high stilettos. Think elegance, Derek Lam and colour blocks when it comes to Bree Van De Kamp, and heavy trench coats when it comes to Edie Britt.

Daria

The iconic cartoon has us craving for combat boots to make a comeback. Though Daria Morgendorffer would probably not approve of being on a list like this, you can get her look with a sexy black mini skirt, badass leather jacket and a cute backpack. While you could always get a run of the mill Jansport, try a little harder with a simple black buckle up backpack. Special shoutout to Jane’s chic blunt bob!!!

 Full House

DJ Tanner knew the importance of an embellished denim jacket with a side of sarcasm. She tackled life altering issues like boys, pimples and an annoying family, all while rocking bold prints and scrunchies for days. Think clueless meets suburban chic with plaids, checks, surprising pops of colour and lots of chokers. Did the 90s ever really go away?
