Set up special purpose vehicle to prioritise railway projects: Centre to Tamil Nadu

The Centre has appealed to TN government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up a  Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to fast track railway projects.

CHENNAI: The Centre has appealed to TN government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up a  Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to fast track railway projects.

Inaugurating 10 new railway projects on Saturday, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said the other southern States, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had already signed the MoU, which gave individual States the luxury to prioritise projects suiting their own requirements. The minister called upon TN legislators and ministers, including State transport minister M R Vijaya Bhaskar who were present at the event, to convince the State government to sign for an SPV.

Prabhu said this following demands for new trains and an additional train between Coimbatore-Bengaluru, and Madurai-Kanniyakumari doubling project.

TN did not sign the MoU demanding changes in the existing framework of rules under which the SPV would work.

AIADMK’s Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan said he would reiterate the demands pertaining to railways earlier envisaged by former CM J Jayalalithaa when the Parliament session begins.  Similarly, the party’s MP A Navaneethakrishnan also suggested railway projects that needed attention from the ministry.
