Police said the two went on a robbery spree on March 2 after stealing a motorbike parked in front of a house in Chinmaya Nagar.

“After this, they went to Virugambakkam and snatched a gold chain from one Manimegalai (48) who was walking home in Venkestwara Nagar around 3 pm. They then reached the main road, and after 10 minutes, they robbed the gold chain from one Kala (55), and fled the spot even as a few locals tried to catch them,” said the police.

“After four hours, they headed to Vadapalani and snatched another chain from one Divya (24), a software employee. All the three incidents were recorded on CCTV which made it easier to identify the suspects,” said the police.

The police said a total of 51 sovereigns of gold jewellery were recovered from them. Police claimed Saravanan was facing two murder cases and was even detained once under the Goondas Act.

A police officer probing the case said the two became friends when they met in a TASMAC shop and decided to rob to make quick money.
