CHENNAI: A rashly driven mini-truck crashed into the side wall of Chennai's landmark Gemini bridge this morning and triggered a series of collisions in which an MUV with a family inside got trapped between the truck and an MTC bus.

Four members of the family travelling in the MUV (Mahindra Tavera) close behind the mini-truck were injured and a 10-year-old child has been moved to a private hospital with severe injuries, police sources said.

A police officer on the scene told New Indian Express, “The truck rammed into the side wall as it approached the bridge from the Royapettah side and the Tavera rammed into the truck and an MTC bus coming close behind rammed into the MUV.”

The accident took place around 7 am just at the US Consulate. The family in the Mahindra Tavera, residing at SV First Street at Royapettah, was headed in the rented MUV to Pachai Amman Temple at Thirumulaivayal, on the outskirts of Chennai.

The injured family members identified by the police are Tamilmani, aged 62, Dayalan, 57, Vidhya, 12, and Sabresh, 10.

The MTC bus driver Karna also suffered injuries.

The driver of the mini-truck driver who is said to have triggered the series of collisions fled the spot and police are looking for him. The Adyar traffic investigation wing has registered a case and are investigating.

About five months ago, on November 11, a tipper truck plunged from the Gemini flyover and fell on three vehicles parked on the roadside.
