CHENNAI: A car racer and his wife were charred to death when they rammed a roadside tree, reportedly driving at breakneck speed, and their BMW car went up in flames today in the wee hours in Chennai.
The BMW car is said to have been engulfed by fire almost instantly, leaving no chance for the racer, Ashwin Sundar, aged 27, and his wife Niveditha to get out of the car.
The couple were said to be returning from Elliots beach in Besant Nagar around 2 am and were driving on the Dr DGS Dinakaran Salai at very high speed.
A passerby captured the scenes live on Facebook as the luxury car caught fire and repeatedly burst with loud noises.
Ashwin Sundar was a resident of Alapakkam near Porur and was a professional racer. Niveditha was a doctor in a private hospital.
The police could recover the bodies only after the car and its two occupants were completely charred.
