Speaker resolution will be taken up on March 23 in Chennai

The resolution on ‘removal’ of Assembly Speaker for which the DMK has given notice on March 9 will be taken up by the Chair on March 23.

CHENNAI: The resolution on ‘removal’ of Assembly Speaker for which the DMK has given notice on March 9 will be taken up by the Chair on March 23.

Sources said that on that day, during the zero hour, it would be taken up as the first business of the House.
Speaker P Dhanapal would read the resolution to the Assembly and request the members who are in favour of leave being granted to move the resolution to stand up  in their places.

If 35  members supported the resolution, the Speaker would declare that leave was granted. Thereafter, the resolution can be taken up for discussion immediately or within seven days.

Since this resolution is taken up on March 23, the rest of the proceedings would be chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House. He would call for voice vote to decide how many members are supporting the resolution. If there is opposition to voice vote more than once, the Chair would opt for a division.

On February 18, the DMK members were evicted en masse following uproarious scenes when Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami moved a ‘confidence vote’.

Later, DMK members charged that the Speaker was acting in a biased manner and on February 21, gave notice for moving a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.
