CHENNAI: A middle aged couple have been taken into custody by the city police for allegedly buying a new born baby boy. The couple were caught when they brought the child for check up to the Government Hospital for Women and Children,  Egmore, on Thursday.

The couple were identified as Makesh (45), working in a private firm, and Vidya, (42), working as a maternity assistant in a prime health centre in Madhavaram. They were caught when they were not able to answer the doctor’s question if the child was born in a normal delivery or C-section.  An investigation officer said the couple were childless and had allegedly bought the child from a woman who agreed to sell the baby owing to financial constrains.

The incident came to light on Thursday when the couple brought the child to the government hospital and were not able to answer the doctor’s question. Moreover, the woman did not have post-pregnancy signs.
Growing suspicious, the doctor informed the police stationed at the hospital who referred the case to the Rajamangalam police station, the area where the baby was bought.
Sources said that the child was born on March 18 in a hospital in Pattalam near Otteri. The officer further added that the biological mother of the  child was traced who admitted that she sold the baby owing to poverty. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
