Chennai Metro Rail was a DMK project, says Stalin

The DMK chief also drew attention to the fact that Jayalalithaa had pitched for Mono Rail instead of Metro.

CHENNAI: Joining issue with Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu for giving credit to the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa for implementing the Chennai Metro Rail project, DMK leader M K Stalin on Monday said ‘lies’ were constantly peddled to mask the role of M Karunanidhi in initiating his dream project.

In a statement here, he recalled the initiatives the DMK government had taken when it was in power during 2006-11. “It was during the 23rd Cabinet meeting that the policy decision was made regarding CMRL project and the DMK regime went forward with the project proposal pegged at Rs 14,600 crore,” he said.

Stating that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs of the Centre approved the CMRL project on January 28, 2009, he noted that a general consultant was appointed by the DMK on February 24, 2009.

“I am deeply shocked and amused by the words of chief minister and Naidu who chose to twist facts to suit their needs,” Stalin noted. He also drew attention to the fact that Jayalalithaa had pitched for Mono Rail instead of Metro.
