CHENNAI: The Centre has promised to begin work for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu this year, according to the State health minister C Vijaya Baskar.

Speaking to the media after inaugurating various facilities at the Institute of Child Health, Egmore on Friday, he said the Union Health Minister had promised to begin the work towards an AIIMS in Tamil Nadu this year.

The health secretary J Radhakrishnan said the State had submitted all information on the five sites identified. “The Parliamentary Committee came to Coimbatore last week, then the State submitted all details they wanted.”

The minister inaugurated the entrance arch, new born operation theatre built for Rs 1.3 crore and a high dependency unit for newborns and newborn 40-bedded ward built for Rs 4.5 crore. The health secretary said a molecular genetic lab was being built at the ICH for research on congenital defects.

The minister said the exclusive operation theatre for newborns in the government hospital was the first of its kind in the country. He also said the health department was taking action against unhygienic food carts outside the hospital.
