Losing control, the i20 car hit the central median, flipped and slammed into an oncoming vehicle, a Honda Amaze. The collision left three passengers in the Honda car, including the driver, a senior citizen, seriously injured, while four students in the i20 narrowly escaped with injuries.
Poonamallee Traffic Investigation Police told Express that the incident occurred around 3 PM near Kovur bridge before Porur tollgate.

The police have identified Pramod, a 21 year old first year MBA student of SRM University, Kattankulathur, as the one who drove the Volkswagen. His friends, Prashanth Kumar, Gokul and Nagaraj, were seated in the car. The second car, i20, was driven by Vignesh Kumar (21), also a first year MBA student at SRM.  Two other students, Sridhar and Hariharan, were fellow passengers. All of them were reportedly proceeding towards Villivakkam after college hours.

Narrating the incident, police said they believe both the cars were racing each other and Pramod allegedly lost control. “While the Volkswagen came to a halt after hitting the median, the i20 overturned and crashed into the oncoming Honda car on the other side of the road.”

The Honda and i20 was heavily damaged.Police said the Honda, car belonging to a travel agency was driven by Murthy (61). He was taking two customers, Ramesh (39) and Kumaraguruban (41) from Anna Nagar to Kelambakkam. All the three were severely injured due to the impact and were taken to a private hospital.

An investigating officer said, “Surprisingly, no one in the i20 car was injured despite being involved in the collision. “Based on a complaint, we have registered a case. Both Pramod and Vignesh have been arrested.” They were not drunk and they possessed valid licence.” Further investigation is on.
