CHENNAI: The Mamallapuram Police have launched a search for a share auto driver who allegedly molested a 29-year-old Finnish woman recently. The victim had come to India two months ago and was residing at Mamallapuram. She was volunteering at an NGO.

“On September 8, she was returning to her residence from Kelambakkam by share auto. A few metres after the ride began, other passengers got off at their destinations and the woman was alone in the vehicle.
“She called up her friend to wait at Mamallapuram to pick her up, but the driver stopped the vehicle at a secluded place ahead of Mamallapuram and misbehaved with her,” said a senior police officer.

“The woman, however, managed to escape and ran to her friend. Later, the duo lodged a complaint with the Mamallapuram police,” said the officer.

Police said the woman stayed with her friends in the city. Police are scanning CCTV footage and all the share autos in the locality to trace the suspect.

On April 2, a 32-year-old German woman was allegedly raped by an unidentified man near Mahabalipuram.

“Since it is a secluded place, women and couples, especially foreigners are being targeted. We have increased patrolling along the stretch to ensure safety,” the officer said.
