Opening in Chennai last weekend, the small Keventers outlet on the ground floor is already abuzz with loyalists. “Glad that they’ve finally opened up after teasing the people of Chennai for a few months now. I love the fact that they strategically open kiosks close to clubs. After a fun night, the yellow light shines like a beacon of hope and all you want is a bottle of milkshake!” says Sethu, a foodie, excitedly.

For a few people from New Delhi, who’ve now become Chennaiites, Keventers is more than just a milkshake; it is a nostalgic souvenir from back home. “It reminds me of my childhood. It’s a rather momentous occasion that a brand like this is so close to where I live now,” says Rakesh, entrepreneur and co-founder of Genie app, adding that the brand has an amazing history. “They used to sell milkshakes from a small shop in Connaught Place (New Delhi). With all the bottling and branding, they’ve been able to retain their taste and the goodness of their signature milk.”

Ritesh Parakh, a food blogger in the city, concurs. “My first Keventers shake was in their Connaught Place outlet when I was 4. The milkshakes have stayed true to their flavours always. So happy to see something I’ve had from childhood every summer...,” he smiles. Their menu caters to the best of both worlds, with classic shakes like vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch that appeal to all, and the more quirky thick shakes — kit kat, oreo, pop-corn caramel shake for the more adventurous lot! “We have a dedicated innovation and R&D cell, who work to find new flavours. We’re researching new flavours once a week!” explains Sohrab Sitaram, CEO, director and co-founder, Keventers.

The Keventers signature extends beyond its lusciously thick and creamy shakes. The vintage-feel glass bottles in which the shakes are served are takeaways, a typical signature of Keventers used from its earlier dairy days. “The Keventers history intrigued me, apart from the amazing taste and the branding. The best part is there is so much you can do with these bottles once you are done drinking the milkshake; my sister and I doodle on them and put some fairy lights. They can be used as a room decor as well!” says Unnati Trivedi, food blogger at ‘The Enthu Foodie’.

And what’s more, each city’s outlets have bottles unique to them, adding a fun quotient to their branding, explains Sohrab. Speaking of Keventers’ new base in Chennai, he says “Chennai is one of the oldest port cities, with an ancient Tamil background and the British history makes it a very rich cultural terrain. That is exactly like Keventers — because it tells a story of heritage and modernity. And Chennai has tropical climate; so we’re sure milkshakes will do really well,” he laughs, adding that they feel the customers here are very discerning. “People in Chennai believe in quality, and if we breakthrough the market here, it will be a victory for us!” he says, adding that they are now looking to expand more in the UAE and Africa.
