CHENNAI: The city police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested one of the two men who dragged a woman on road recently at Arumbakkam to snatch the gold chain she was wearing.
The robbery on February 11, shocked the city as a CCTV footage showed the gruesome manner in which S Menaka was dragged for at least 10 metres at Valluvar Nagar, Veena Garden.
In the video circulated on Tuesday, the suspect, V Arun Kumar, was seen with his hand bandaged.
When asked about it, a police officer who investigated the case, said it was due to an injury that Arun Kumar suffered when he tried to escape from a police team. “We got a tip off that Arun, one of the accused, was in Anna Nagar.
A special team that was formed, spotted him at Sathya Nagar. When he tried to flee police, he jumped over a compound wall and injured his right hand,” the officer said. Police said after Arun’s arrest they recovered a six-sovereign gold chain from him.
The 24-year-old resident of Ayodhya Nagar at Triplicane is a history-sheeter who has 12 chain snatching cases against him, a police press release said. He had been detained under the Goondas Act two times earlier. Police said they were trying to trace the other person involved in the crime.
