CHENNAI: To promote modern dance in the city, Studio for Dance, TTK Road, will organise their yearly dance programme, Origin on February 23. “My husband, Jeethendra, and I started this dance school 15 years back when dance schools in Chennai that focused on non-classical forms of dancing were rare,” says Nisha Thomas, owner , Studio for Dance that has created a platform for young dancers to express their views through movements and body language.

‘Studio for dance’ follows an exclusive curriculum that is based on different ‘levels’. “We do not focus on a single dance style. Depending on the student’s capability, they are trained in various styles,” shares Nisha, adding that they are one of the few studios in the city that teaches the Alvin Ailey-inspired dance form.

So what is this dance form all about?“It is a rebellion against the classical ballet. It incorporates free movement without any bodily restrictions,” explains Jeethendra, who completed the Reebok Instructor Training Programme, an international dance certification programme.

Studio of Dance’s modern dance performance, based on the Delhi gang rape, at a recent event in the city was received well by audiences. “This year, our senior students will also portray the functioning of the human brain in adverse situations through a dance performance.

Audiences can also expect many experimental fusions, adaptation of Broadway numbers, unique funky pieces and performances on Bollywood hits this time,” she smiles.
