Chennai police come under siege, again

Two cops, Nagendran (35) and Praveen (34) from Washermenpet police station, were allegedly assaulted when they tried to cool off a squabble between a house owner and the residents, on Thursday.

CHENNAI: Two cops, Nagendran (35) and Praveen (34) from Washermenpet police station, were allegedly assaulted when they tried to cool off a squabble between a house owner and the residents, on Thursday.

“U Chandra (55) had let out her house in Muthaiah Mestri street for lease to M Jamila (58) around 12 years ago. Jamila and her family refused to leave the house and a case in the civil court has been pending for more than 10 years. On Thursday afternoon at around 2 pm, Chandra had visited Jamila and asked to leave the house within a month.

When Jamila said that she will not leave the house, Chandra tried to make a forced entry into the house. A few men in the same street picked up an argument with Chandra,” said police inspector Jawahar, Washermenpet Police arrested B Naimuddin (31), K Wasim (26) and S Amanullah (56) for assaulting the cops and are looking out for one more.

This week, in another incident, the city witnessed a brutal assault on a police constable at Royapettah. One of the suspects was shot dead by police in “self-defence. ”
