No pet park for Chennai in the near future

With pets not being allowed incorporation parks and the draft of the Solid Waste Management Byelaws 2016 proposing to fine dog owners who fail to clean up.

CHENNAI: The city would not be getting a ‘Pet park’ anytime soon with the city corporation officials saying that the proposal has been ‘dropped’ at least for the time being. Pet owners in the city, who have long been demanding an exclusive pet park, may have celebrated too early as reports of the civic body considering the idea surfaced. However, corporation officials, have now decided to set aside the proposal since the ‘time is not ripe’ for a pet park.

“The project was already only in a very nascent stage and we thought that such a park was not necessary at the moment,” said corporation sources. The proposal was deferred in the Board of Directors meeting of Chennai Smart City Ltd that was held in June.

With pets not being allowed incorporation parks and the draft of the Solid Waste Management Byelaws 2016 proposing to fine dog owners who fail to clean up, pet owners have been on the lookout for walking spaces for their dogs. “We were actually looking forward to a dedicated space for pets for walking our pets and also to let them socialise,” said Saranya P, a pet owner. “We are shooed away in other spaces even if we try to tell them we will be cleaning up,” she added.
