Chennai Police Commissioner lauds city hero, awards cash prize

The city police commissioner, AK Viswanathan, appreciated T Vigneshwaran who bravely chased and nabbed a cellphone robber at Saidapet on Monday.

CHENNAI: The city police commissioner, AK Viswanathan, appreciated T Vigneshwaran who bravely chased and nabbed a cellphone robber at Saidapet on Monday.

Twenty-four-year-old R Preethi, a resident of Saidapet, works in a private company at Adyar. On Monday, at around 8.30 pm, she alighted the bus to walk towards her home. While crossing the Metro station, two men on a bike tried to snatch her mobile phone. Preethi, who was holding on to her phone, fell down and the men dragged her for a short distance. Another man, who was on his motorbike crossing the same stretch, witnessed the incident and raised an alarm.

Twenty-seven-year-old T Vigneshwaran, also a resident of Saidapet, heard the alarm raised by Preethi and chased the culprits on his two-wheeler for around four kilometres. When the robbers came near T Nagar bus stand, Vigneshwaran rammed the robbers’ bike with his, making them fall off the bike. Vigneshwaran nabbed Naveen (19) from Guindy and another man at a distance caught the other accused, who is a juvenile.

On Wednesday, the city police commissioner invited Vigneshwaran to his chamber in the commissioner’s office in Vepery and appreciated him for his bravery. He rewarded Vigneshwaran with a cash prize. Vigneshwaran’s parents were also present.

Speaking to Express, a senior police officer said, “People should not be afraid to help nab culprits. Policemen reached the spot immediately after the robbers were nabbed and arrested them.”
