CHENNAI: Doctors at Fortis Malar Hospital performed a heart transplant on a 15-year-old girl from Bihar recently. According to a release from the hospital, Dharanum Parveen from the underprivileged section of society received financial aid from Aishwarya Trust, an NGO. Dharanum is a daughter of a tailor and a domestic help and always emerged as a topper in school.

Dharanum was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart’s ability to pump blood is lessened because of enlarging and weakening of heart valve muscle.

Since she was from Bihar, she was not eligible for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Therefore, with the help of the non-governmental organisation, the patient underwent heart transplant.

“The patient was brought in a critical condition. Medication was provided to support her frail heart and we monitored her clinical functions closely. Luckily, she got a heart within two weeks and the surgery was performed,” the release concluded.
