Three-member gang of Iranians held for robbing five women

Despite the police maintaining a high vigil on city roads at night, a three-member gang of Iranians allegedly robbed five women of 43-sovereign gold on Tuesday morning.

CHENNAI: Despite the police maintaining a high vigil on city roads at night, a three-member gang of Iranians allegedly robbed five women of 43-sovereign gold on Tuesday morning. However, the police arrested them on Wednesday.

Police said the robbers snatched chains from the five women, most of them above 60 years and the incidents were recorded in CCTV cameras in the localities.

The first victim was S Kavitha, 43, a resident of Mangadu, who works as a nurse at the Royapettah Government Hospital. The men then struck at Pulianthope, the Padi Kuppam Road, and Puzhal. Subsequently, the city police arrested the culprits identified as Ambadoss, Navabali and Abas in this connection.   

M C Sarangan, Additional Commissioner of Police, Law and Order (South), said, “After studying the crime sequences, we found that they were committed by an outside gang. We received information that the gang had moved towards Andhra Pradesh. A special team rushed to Andhra Pradesh. The vehicle of the accused was chased and they were arrested.”

Police launch Search for elderly man in connection with chain-snatching cases

Chennai: The city police are on the look-out for a man, believed to be in his 60s, wanted in chain-snatching cases at Valasaravakkam and K K Nagar. “On Tuesday afternoon, a four-sovereign chain was snatched from an elderly woman while she was on her way to a shop in Azhwar Thirunagar in Valasaravakkam. Similarly, another woman in her 40s was robbed of a six-sovereign chain in K K Nagar. Based on these two complaints, we went through CCTV footages,” said an officer attached to the crime branch of Valasaravakkam. The police officer said it was shocking to find a man, who seems to be in his 60s, robbing lonely women at daytime in the heart of the city. “With the growing incidents of chain snatching and robbery, the city has already undergone many changes and more accused have been arrested, most of whom are youth. This is the first time in recent times that an elderly man has been involved in such incidents,” said the officer.

Six arrested in Kanchi, Chennai

Chennai: The Kancheepuram and Chennai police on Wednesday arrested six persons who were allegedly involving in snatchings and thefts. A police official attached to Vyasapardi station said, “During a vehicle check in the wee hours of Wednesday, three men tried to escape through zig-zag barricades. However, police nabbed them. Investigation revealed that the trio were on their way after snatching a mobile phone at  Kodungaiyur. They have committed a series of snatchings at Vyasarpadi, Kodungaiyur and Washermenpet. Similarly in Kanchipuram, police nabbed three men who were returning after committing snatchings. “The trio on a bike, without helmet, were trying to take a U-turn after noticing the police at the check post. We chased the suspects and nabbed them,” said an Oragadam police official.
