CHENNAI: After four days, the nation-wide indefinite strike called by All India Confederation of Goods Vehicles Owners Association (AICGVOA) was withdrawn on Thursday.

According to R Sukumar, president of Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation (TNLOF), affiliated to  AICGVOA, the union ministry has scheduled talks with various trade unions across the country on June 27, to look into the key demands.

“We were told that government is willing to change the pricing mechanism of diesel.  We are assured that diesel prices will not be changed on a daily basis, but will be fixed once in every three months,” he said.
Claiming that other demands, including reducing the premium and cess on third party insurance, also had been accepted by government, the lorry owners federation president said the government had agreed to constitute a committee comprising various departments, including Ministry of road transport, NHAI and petroleum ministry, to look into the issue on toll rates. He hoped a final decision will be taken at the meeting in Delhi on June 27.

About 2.5 lakh truckers went on strike since Monday.  The trucks will resume operation by mid night, the association said.

Diesel prices have risen steadily over the last few months and have become a major cause of concern for both the public and truckers.
